Car Window Tinting Laws

These laws are for car window tinting in the UK. If you are outside of the UK then you should check with your state or countries laws. In the UK, regulations set by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency under the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 require:

  • Rear windows (all windows behind the B-Post / behind the front seats) - there's no regulations on the rear windows. You can put whatever shade you require.
  • Front driver and passenger side windows - you must allow at least 70% of light to pass through. Remember if you fit a 70% tint and the glass is already tinted this will take the glass over the legal limit.
  • Front windscreen - you must allow at least 70% of light to pass through. The only exception is that you may fit a sunstrip, this can be 6" (15cm) or whatever doesn't obscure the view straight in front of you. If the tint is out of view then you can whatever shade you require.
